DIPANKAR BHATTACHARJEE
Double Olympian and multiple-time National Men’s Singles Badminton Champion
Dipankar Bhattacharjee, a distinguished Indian badminton player and Double Olympian, has made significant contributions to the sport both nationally and internationally. Originally from Assam, Dipankar began his badminton journey at a young age, inspiring athletes across India, particularly in his home state. Born on February 1, 1972, he showed exceptional talent early on and trained under renowned coaches, including former All England Champion and World No. 1, Shri Prakash Padukone.
He made history as the first Indian shuttler to qualify consecutively for two Olympic Games, representing India in Barcelona (1992) and Atlanta (1996). Dipankar’s impressive career includes three National Badminton Championship titles (1994, 1995, and 1996), solidifying his dominance and earning him the top rank in India for six consecutive years. On the international stage, he competed against top players, gaining experience that he later shared with aspiring players. His commitment to the sport and his achievements have cemented him as a lasting icon in Indian badminton.

I’ve been blessed to be the only Olympian from Assam in badminton till date, and I wear that title with pride. Being called a legend is an honour, but it’s also a reminder of the responsibility I carry. It’s not enough to rest on past achievements; now it’s time to give back, to rise above the challenges and uncertainties that linger over our sports ecosystem and build a brighter future.
